Police activity on Hertford Road in Enfield, north London, prompted a road closure and traffic disruption on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as officers remained at the scene of an incident whose nature had not been publicly confirmed in the reports available.
The closure affected Hertford Road near the junction with Ordnance Road, with traffic delays reported in the surrounding area. Although the incident has prompted questions about a possible shooting, no reliable confirmation was found establishing that gunfire occurred or that anyone was injured by a firearm.
What Happened on Hertford Road?
A local report published on October 20 stated that police had cordoned off part of Hertford Road following an overnight incident. Officers were reportedly still at the scene during the morning, while the affected stretch of road remained closed.
The report placed the closure between the Turkey Street and Ordnance Road junctions in Enfield. It also described disruption to nearby businesses and traffic moving through the Freezy Water area. However, the specific circumstances that led to the police response had not been confirmed in the report.
Transport for London separately listed Hertford Road as closed in both directions at the Ordnance Road junction following an emergency services incident. Its traffic update also warned of delays affecting nearby roads.
Has a Shooting Been Confirmed?
As of the latest information reviewed for this report, a shooting on Hertford Road on October 20 could not be independently verified.
The confirmed information concerns police activity, a road closure and traffic disruption. Those circumstances alone do not establish that a firearm was used, that shots were fired or that a shooting victim was taken to hospital.
The Metropolitan Police had not been located in the reviewed sources as having issued a statement confirming a shooting at this specific location and time. The reason for the police cordon therefore remains unclear based on the information currently available.
Readers should be cautious about social media posts or headlines describing the incident as a confirmed shooting until police or another reliable source establishes what happened.
Road Closure and Traffic Disruption
The emergency response affected traffic on Hertford Road around Ordnance Road. Transport for London advised road users to use alternative routes, reporting delays on southbound Hertford Road and congestion extending towards Mollison Avenue and Bullsmoor Lane.
Drivers travelling through Enfield should check current traffic information before setting out, as restrictions and diversions can change while emergency services remain at a scene.
Police Investigation and Further Updates
The available reporting indicates that police were present at the scene, but it does not establish whether the incident involved a shooting, an assault or another type of emergency.
